Talking with Alex Freeman About Her Career & Details on Upcoming Projects

Singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur Alex Freeman had a goal in 2020 to write 20 songs. She not only doubled her goal within that year, but has continued this new year strong—creating even more songs that she is ready to release to the world. After beginning her career at the young age of five, Freeman knows that she was always meant to be where she is now. She shares her passions through her InstagramSpotify, and her personal website. Her newest music video for Paper Mask can be found here.

We discussed some in-depth plans and details for her upcoming songs and music videos to be released below.

Twenty2: Would you tell me the story of how your singer/songwriter career has advanced to where you are now?

Alex: So, I started writing, performing, and singing when I was about five years old. I wrote my first song because I was bullied, and I released it when I was seven. I realized that it is nice to be able to take the things that happened to me and put it in into a medium that people can understand and relate to it. I have been writing and performing since. However, in Paper Mask, one of my recent songs, and in Oh Baby, which is my next song to come out, I definitely lightened up on those usual topics.

Specifically with motivational speaking, my dad has been a motivational speaker for years. I always was around motivational discussions. So, my dad would help me write scripts and we would post videos to Youtube every Friday. Then, I would go into school and talk about being goal-oriented, bullying, and anything about reaching positivity. I am very thankful my dad was helpful in pushing me to do that.

I then started working with Suicide Prevention in early 2020. The sad part is I could not do many events during COVID-19. However, I was very excited to work with them, so I did do quite a few virtual performances.

Twenty2: Tell me about your experience of making music during COVID-19?

Alex: So, with everything going on during COVID-19 I definitely used music even more as a creative outlet. I was able to completely finish around 44 songs, and I have many, many more that I know are nearly finished. And that was just during 2020. Over this year I have had over 50+ songs that I have finished and that are ready to be released. I went out to LA in November last year, and I was able to work with some very big-named people and release all kinds of the music that I had planned to release. With Paper Mask, I was able to write what everyone in the entire world was experiencing, and how I feel like a lot of people have united through social media and being able to communicate through our devices throughout COVID-19.

Twenty2: Can you tell me some information on your song Oh Baby to be released?

Alex: With Oh Baby, this is my first song where I haven’t had a very intense topic. It is just a song about liking somebody, so it is interesting watching my own transition from singing about bullying and suicide prevention, to COVID-19 in Paper Mask, to Oh Baby. I am really excited to be able to release it. Oh Baby is coming out on August 27th.

We are about to film the music video, I believe, in two or three weeks. We want to make sure we release the song first, because what we learned with Paper Mask is that we probably should have released the song a little more before we released the video, just so the song could have stimulated attraction. Then, the people who like it will go watch the music video, rather than choosing which to view.

Twenty2: Would you tell me more about the music video to be made for Oh Baby?

Alex: We didn’t actually know we were going to release Oh Baby until two weeks ago. We knew we were going to release, but we had no clue what song. Then, I had a release party for Paper Mask, and everyone was like, “Wow, this one song you played at the party I really enjoyed.” I was like, “Okay, I’d love to release Oh Baby.” For the music video, it’s going to be really interesting because we are taking a totally different take than what the song seems to be really about. It is a very basic pop song, so we decided to have a very interesting topic for the music video. After I had a couple meetings with my mom, choreographer, and director, my mom suggested we take inspiration from Green mythology. And then it was like—"What about medusa?”

So, our plan for the music video is not for it to be just about medusa, but to kind of use elements from her story: we plan to shoot a beauty shot that involves a full-on milk bath with snakes in it and we are going to have stone statues. We wanted to make it something really interesting to watch.

Twenty2: What is a part of your career you really enjoy?

Alex: The really fun part is creating the music videos and having the creative visions for everything. Me and my mom work together for everything for my music videos. So, every single item of clothing in the [Paper Mask] music video, we picked. Every little bead or anything, on clothing or as décor, was hand-picked and probably handcrafted by us. Everything done to look good in the music video was me and my mom’s doing. Then, my choreographer and I went over everything. We choregraphed the entire song, even just to use two seconds of the choreography. Overall, it is really interesting to be able to work on projects where I have so many creative outlets throughout the entire thing.

Twenty2: What is something your fans may not know about you yet?

Alex: I am a very artsy person. When I am not working on music, I will be painting or I will be drawing—working on anything creative. Also, I have a ton of friends who live within a two-mile radius from me, and since I live on a lake, we go boating all the time.

No matter what, always believe in yourself and work hard. Never let anything someone says stop you. Some people will just know what they are meant to do; they will have that feeling deep inside of them. So, if there is something you feel you are made to do, work for it and don’t let anyone stop you.
